Outdoor Lifestyle

Living in a rural mountain town like Castlegar means driving to all the activities you love is almost non-existent. You live amongst the trees and rivers, they are not a destination. We hike, mountain bike, ski (Nordic and Downhill), climb, fish, golf, and kayak sometimes only a short walk from where we live. While we have an airport to escape if we need to we rarely want to leave as we live where most people come to vacation. Life here is slow and gentle, families love it, and outdoor people are our people. While we’ve earned the nickname “Cancelgar” due to the valley we live in, we rarely want to leave anyway.

Arts & Culture

Realizing that cities gain value through public art– cultural, social, and economic value, the City of Castlegar invested in its local artists, making Castlegar the Sculpture capital of Canada, and a fun place to visit! The City also supports the Kootenay Gallery of Art, established back in 1972 the Gallery boasts the most rotating exhibits in the area, and yearly fundraisers. Castlegar is also home to a vibrant and unique community of Doukhobour people who have played a significant role in shaping the history and culture of this region.
